STAVE DRUMS

Modern ply drums are made from ply wood that is glued in layers to form a cylinder. For this process, the wood is covered in glue to bond the layers that create the shell. The layers of glue cause stress and deadens the sound of the wood. The sound is not natural, higher pitched and travels around the drum.

Stave shell drums resonate and vibrate naturally. The shell of the drum is made from solid pieces of wood (stave) using very little glue (5-8% of traditional drums). The result of this process creates the tone and pitch that is clear. The wood used is cut with the grain (vertically) which allows for more resonance because the sound travels down through the wood fibers. This also causes stave shell drums to have a lower pitch which is desirable. Another advantage of the use of the vertical grain is the added strength due to less stress in the wood.
